First Baby Food

Before making a decision about whether or not to begin solids with Connor, I decided to google it. Who knew the deep seeded argument about giving solids to newborns?!? I was shocked to read moms on chatrooms FIGHTING. Some said that you should breastfeed exclusively until a year old, others touted research from American Academy of Pediatrics which says to wait until 6 months, and the rest telling moms to go with their guts.

Because I no longer have the option of breastfeeding until 12 months (trust me, I would love to have this as an option!!!), I really had to focus on the other two - wait until 6 months or go with my gut. I went onto the AAP's website and found conflicting research (one study said waiting until 6 months or later can cause allergic reactions and a sensitivity to food...a second study said giving babies before 6 months can cause allergic reactions). Ha!

At the end of the day, I have to look at the signs, not his age. And the fact of the matter is that he is highly interested in food, follows the fork while we're eating, opens his mouth when we put the spoon near him, pushes his tongue back to swallow, and makes chewing motions in his mouth when you put cereal inside. Thus, today marks a first in Connor's world: the first time he ate "baby food." We started him with these Gerber Organic Banana Baby first foods.

This is one of those things where you really do need to go with your gut and your pediatrician's advice. Same with vaccine's. No one else can tell you what your baby needs. Moments like this are when the mommy and daddy instinct kick in. Dont you love those mommy boards though?? =)
