Connor Update - Potty Training

I just realized I haven't really done a potty training update after the last one.
Have I ever mentioned that I felt so much guilt about waiting until Connor was three to potty train him? Several of my friends had kids who were potty trained much sooner and I just felt like if I had been at home with him, I could have done it sooner (working Mama guilt). A few people had made comments to me about him not being potty trained yet (they weren't trying to be mean...they just were surprised) and that didn't help me with the guilt.

I had also heard that once a kid is ready, you shouldn't make them wait to potty train (and we obviously TOTALLY broke that rule too...what rule breakers we are!). Have I mentioned that I felt guilty about that too? Ha! My fear is always that some day he'll be talking to his therapist saying things like, "If only my mom wouldn't have waited too long to potty train me, I wouldn't even have needed therapy"...or "If my mom would have been a stay-at-home Mama, I would be so much better!..."

So, needless to say, when we finally did potty train, I was already worried. I had already messed up, right? I had potty trained him too late. I had broken the rules. I was a bad mom. (I hope I'm not the only one who "goes there" whenever I feel guilty). But, can I just say that I'm so glad we waited. Not only was I able to be home and really immersed in what we were doing, but CONNOR WAS SO READY. I think 99% of potty training is waiting until they're ready. He has been potty trained for almost two months and we have had about 5 accidents since that very first day we started (two of them were the third and fourth day). I think that's pretty darn miraculous. So, despite my failures and my blatant breaking of rules, I guess I didn't forever mess him up (well, I didn't forever mess him up TODAY...I still have time to mess him up tomorrow). Whew!

It's when you push them too soon that you end up with problems! Waiting to make sure they're 100% ready is the key to potty training. I spent 18 miserable months trying to potty train my daughter before I finally gave up and then she potty trained herself a month later because she was ready and it wasn't a battle anymore. My son is 2 and I've introduced the potty chair to him, but I'm not pushing him into training.

Congrats!!! I am so with you! We waiting until the summer because I wanted to wait until I had the time to devote to it/him. Glad it's gone so well!! We have been accident free- except for the poops. He will not go poop in the potty. Any tips?!?

Connor looks SO much like your hubby in this picture! Great job Momma! I stay at home with PW during the day and he wasn't potty trained until just before his 3rd birthday as well. I tried and tired, but finally just let him show me when he was ready. So no matter when and if you work, it is what it is. : ) It's been super easy since then. But we still use pull-ups at night and I'm just fine with that! : )
