Leaping Beauty

Last Sunday we had our monthly book club meeting! I joke on instagram each month about how it's really just an excuse to drink wine with the girls, but the reality is that it's so much more. Of course, first and foremost, I love to read. If I didn't love books, I certainly wouldn't be in a book club. I love reading and discussing the nuances of the books with people who love to read. I always walk away with a different perspective, a new aha, or a deeper love for the book.

Secondly, being in a book club means doing something for me where I get to get out of the house and be with other women. I always come home smiling, feeling refreshed, and happy that I got a break from bathtime, tantrums over bedtime, and the nightly "it's time to brush your teeth" wrestling match. When I started a book club last summer, my main goal was to remember and re-fall in love with my hobbies and loves before becoming a Mama. Some of my friends go to the gym; others ride horses or bike ride; I am in a book club!

This month we read the short stories in Leaping Beauty by Gregory Maguire (the author of Wicked). It's a children's book, but I guarantee you, you'll get a chuckle out of the way she takes traditional fairy tales and puts a hillarious twist on them. "Who would have thought that the ageless, exquisite Cinderella could be recast as the silly story of an enormous yet lovable elephant who plods along to the ball with glass pie plates on her feet; or that Sleeping Beauty, that most regal of all fairy tales, could be twisted into the story of a frog with a most unusual and promising dance career? Get ready to meet a gorilla queen and a psycho chimp, seven giant giraffes, and one very bad walrus." Description Source: Gregory Maguire's Website.

Are you a Mama who struggles with finding time for the hobbies you enjoyed pre-kids? My suggestion is to get your calendar out and pencil in your hobbies. It may seem silly, but I find that if they're on a calendar, I don't feel guilty making time to do the things I love.

The book sounds really interesting. I loved wicked so I'm going to have to check out this book.

Great tip about penciling in hobbies! I have let so many things go I love. Like scrap booking but now I guess my blog has become my scrapbook. I am going to take your advice though and schedule something I LOVE:)
