A Day at the Lake

We went to the lake Fourth of July weekend, and the kids had so much fun. I don't know why I hadn't thought to go earlier, but it's the perfect thing for them to do because they can run around in the sand and then get in the water when they want to cool off. I grew up going to the beach and I always thought that's what I'd do with my kids. And there may come a day when they'll like that better, but honestly, the lake is the PERFECT thing for them at this age - because they don't have to be scared of the waves. And, unlike the ocean and pool, with the lake they don't need us to help them to go in the water.
Miss Isabella Lynn, our little pool swimmer, hates the lake. Hates, hates, hates. What a funny little fickle thing. And then, Aiden, "Mr. I hate the pool" loves the lake. Loves, loves, loves. I mean, what little crack-ups.

Grandma came with us and the kids had so much fun with her.

You know how you never-ever see anyone when you're out and about and look great and put-together? But then the second you look disheveled and a hot mess (minus the hot) - you run into a million people you haven't seen in 5 years? Well, I forgot my swim shorts at home when we went to the lake and I had to wear my skirt in the water. Then I forgot to bring a change of clothes or a shirt to wear. So we decided to go to a local super family-friendly restaurant after the lake and lo and behold...we run into an executive Mr. Howard works with and the woman who will be interviewing him for a promotion tomorrow. I'm literally in a wet skirt and a tube top. Out in public. Of course...

After our first trip, we bought an E-Z up and some camping chairs so we could go again and be a little more comfortable.  So, on Monday after swim lessons we packed up the kids, Grandma, our new supplies, and a picnic lunch and headed to the lake. We met our friends Casey and Jameson there with their boat. I clearly had the best seat in the house! The boys were off to the left and the big boys (hubby and Casey) and Aiden were out in the boat!
Here was the canopy we got! It is amazing! I can totally see using it camping too to keep the flies out! I swear we got our money's worth that first time using it, but I know before the years are up we are going to get a lot of use out of it!
We brought a picnic lunch for everyone and the kids were so funny. Obviously they have never eaten near sand, because they SO did not understand the concept of not sticking their hands in the sand right after we washed them off. Each one of them got a healthy amount of sand on their pizza.
Can you tell how thrilled Aiden was about the big boys getting a ride first?
Is this not the saddest little face you've ever seen. He was SO MAD that he couldn't go with them!
The boys had SO much fun. Connor was so excited. And Isabella, well, she warmed up a whole lot to the water, but unless someone was holding her she wasn't too excited.
Aiden still loved it and we could hardly get him out of there. I had to keep a close eye on him, because he so desperately wanted to go out further and further.
And then, eventually, he got his ride on the boat too. Remember the bouncing that he did at the splash park? Well that's pretty much how he acted the whole time he was out on the boat. He kept saying, "Whoa!! Look!" to his Daddy and Casey the whole time. I actually think he may have been more excited about it than Connor. He is certainly going to be our little dare-devil. He and Daddy are going to have such fun mountain biking and snowboarding and doing all the things that scare the tar out of me.
The kids had so much fun with Grandma. Connor kept asking her, "Did you see me on the boat?" and Izzy and Aiden would say, "look" or "watch!" a million times to her. They certainly love their grandma!
I have plans to go a million more times before the summer is over. I even dug out the big ice chest so we can do some longer stays there. I'm just kicking myself for not thinking of it earlier this summer, because they have so much fun. The bonus for this Mama, though, is that they get so tuckered out and take great naps! The measure of any good day, in the life of parents with young kids, is how well your kids nap afterwards!
