Living Room and Family Room Reveal

We invited people over to watch the football game and they are all currently enthralled with the screen. Me? Not so much. So, after making an AMAZING loaded bake potato dip I found on Pinterest, I am sitting down to finally post the pictures from our floor re-do's in November.
I have always hated carpet (in terms of taking care of it), but I especially disliked it with four adults, three kids, and two dogs living in the house. I felt like I was cleaning the carpet 10 times a day from spills, dog accidents, and normal wear/tear from shoes. We knew we were going to rip out the carpet almost immediately after we bought the house, but the quote that the builder gave us was RIDICULOUS. We tried to have the builder leave the house just concrete, but they wouldn't let us close like that. Boo!

Every year, we host the Christmas Party for my work and so I knew if we were going to re-do the floors, we needed to do it before the party. At the end of November, we ripped out all the carpets and put in a laminate. It took Mr. Howard and my brother two full days to finish the floors and then Mr. Howard several more hours to finish the trim and transition pieces around the house.
First, Mr. Howard and I spent several hours and lots of date nights, back in October and November, trying to figure out what flooring we wanted to do. We debated between wood tile, tile, hardwood, and laminate. In the end, we went with a laminate because we felt like it would be the most durable (with three kids and two dogs!) and easiest to install (I knew if we did tile - we'd almost need to move out for the weekend- because there's no way the kids would stay off of it for 24 hours, so it could set). We went with Saratoga Hickory handscraped 8in wide planks and I really love it!
Becca and I spent two separate evenings, after the kids went to bed, pulling all the nail-strips off the floor. It didn't take us that long once we got a system, but it was exhausting being on our knees on the concrete for a couple hours.
The boys and dogs supervised us.
The boys started laying the floor the next morning:
And at first it went super fast...but once they hit the columns, it went REALLY slowly:
I tried to distract the kids out of the house as much as I could, but occasionally they "helped" Daddy and Uncle Colin.
Can you see the piles and piles of flooring in the background?
Aunt Becca and I also occasionally supervised from the comfort of the tile and couches (with appropriate beverages, of course):
When they got close to being done, it was so exciting! I don't do well with a mess, so I was thankful that it was only two days of a little bit of chaos:

The first night the flooring was in, we had a big dance party. The kids loved putting socks on and slipping and sliding around the floors. Heck! I loved it too! Aunt Becca was making us a delicious soup while the kids and I danced for a while!
Here are some photos of the downstairs I took right before our Christmas Party. We did not remove the tile in our kitchen area or the carpet in our guest bedroom, but everything else got replaced!

Mr. Howard just installed this hanging light fixture a couple weeks ago. There was only a canned light in the ceiling there before.
For Christmas we got curtains for our living and family room from Mr. Howard's parents, so I am so excited to get those hung and photographed to show you!

We replaced ALL of our carpet with laminate in the spring and I LOVE it! Especially today when one of the dogs threw up and I didn't have to worry about scrubbing carpet.

Seriously! That's my favorite part - when a baby spills something or the dogs poop! So much easier!

Well I must say, for someone who is a HUGE fan of carpet and doesn't gravitate toward the hardwood look, I LOVE this! It really changes the look of the space and completes it in a way the carpet didn't. With this floorplan, perfect decision! (and for the record, I would also be blogging while everyone watched the game. B.O.R.I.N.G.) :-) (what potato dip did you make?)

Thank you! I really love the way it looks, but mostly I just love that I can sweep up the mess instead of having to vacuum and carpet clean constantly!!
Here's the recipe for the dip! It was deceivingly delicious (and I don't like bacon!).
