A New Tradition

We were in a unique position this year for Thanksgiving. Hubby works retail and wasn't going to get home until 3am that morning. We knew we couldn't wake right up and head over to my parents' house in the morning because he'd be too tired. So we decided to come up with an alternate plan.

Last year I brainstormed a few things I wanted to do differently. I have always wanted to start doing a special breakfast I only make on certain holidays for my family. My aunt Karen had a coffee cake she'd make whenever we came over and it just sort of always made me feel like it was a special occasion. I wanted to do something similar. So this year, we had planned to start a new cinnamon roll tradition. But then, we found out Mr. Howard wouldn't be awake in the morning; so we slightly changed it.

This year we decided to celebrate Thanksgiving as a little family of five in the morning. I quickly went for a run, first. Then I came home and got the kids up and hung out downstairs, letting my husband sleep for as long as he could. I had already prepared our cinnamon rolls, the night before, and just had to put them in the oven to bake. The kids and I had breakfast, cuddled by the fire on the couch, and watched movies. My husband woke up around 10:30am and then I went back upstairs to get ready. We headed over to my parents around 11:30.
I didn't get a single photo of myself on Thanksgiving. I'm not sure how that happened. I really didn't get any photos of the kids either - but thankfully my brother took some with his nice camera, so I was able to piece together photos!
My mother-in-law made the kids adorable squirrel shirts with matching jammie pants. The kids were thrilled to wear them!
Our lucky kids (unluckily for us) didn't have naps all day - so by the time we left around 7pm, they were exhausted. In a perfect world this would have meant that they would have slept in the next morning, but we don't live in a perfect world. Unfortunately. Ha. I am pretty sure Connor was up and in my bed by 5am. Because, no matter what time of day, my kids always have copious amounts of energy. Always.
All in all, I am thankful my husband was able to spend the day with us. I am thankful we were able to spend time with family. We really, just have so much to be thankful for this year.

I went to bed feeling unbelievably blessed.
