Someday it will matter!

A few weeks ago Mr. Howard and I helped chaperone the twins' preschool Pumpkin Patch Field Trip. All the kids made their own shirts and I am pretty sure that this project is completely representative of their personalities. Isabella's had her family members' names on them (including a boy named Bryson! Eeek). And Aiden's had "3 monsters and a 100 snakes...bad guys" written on his.

A Mama friend (who has high school aged children) gave me really, really great advice because I was telling her how hard it is for me to take off work for field trips (since I'm a teacher and I feel guilty for leaving my 100 middle schoolers with a sub). She said, "these moments won't last long...before you know it, the kids won't want you on their field trips...realistically, what are there? Maybe 10 field trips in elementary school!" Something clicked when she said it and I realized it doesn't matter that I miss ONE day of my middle schoolers' school days. But some day it will matter that I missed all my kids' field trips...especially since - she's right - there are only a handful of them EVER. They will never ever be younger than there are today.
So, I typed up sub plans, told my students what I was doing, and spent the morning chaperoning their trip! If I had missed the trip, I would have missed moments like this, below, with Aiden. Holy adorableness.
And this with Miss Isabella.
I would have missed the Three Little Pigs play and all the giggling that came along with it.
And I would have missed all this cheese-ing.
As a working parent, there's a lot I miss and I'm glad that this field trip wasn't one of those things!

End of Week Randoms

After a lot of Mommy Thinking, I decided to go ahead and cancel ballet classes for Isabella. After struggling four separate times with her and having her climb all over me, cry, and tell me she didn't want to go anymore, I decided to go ahead and cancel our registration. Maybe she'll be ready next year! I am thinking about trying to see if she wants to do a class with Aiden this winter. We'll see.

This past weekend my mother-in-law celebrated her 60th birthday at the beach in Southern California!! We really wanted to come down and celebrate with her, but we thought Connor would have a soccer game; so I needed to stay home with the kids. Of course, weeks after we booked his flight, we realized that we didn't have a soccer game that weekend. Grrr. I was thankful that Mr. Howard got to celebrate with his mom, though!

He got an entire weekend with both of his parents!
The kids and I had a good weekend too, but we definitely missed Daddy!
We bought a new movie and all cuddled on the couch and watched it!
I bought a new lipstick a week or so ago and Aiden thought it was SO funny that I had stuff on my lips. He must have asked me nineteen times what I had on my lips. He even wanted to touch it with his fingers. We texted this to Daddy. I pretty much only wear lipstick when I'm going on a date and so Aiden doesn't really get to see it all that often.
I posted this on instagram with the caption, "The kids like a little pancake with their chocolate chips and I like a little egg with my salsa!" No, but really. We know what we like.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results...Also known as going to target with three children by myself.
We also texted this photo to Daddy. Even though we were having fun, we missed him! The boys were fighting over all the toys they wanted to feature a prominent position in the photo. Oy the fighting.
I did win Mommy kudos, though, as I took them to a fun park that we hadn't been to in forever!
I also let them strip off their shoes and shirts and dance around in the rain! We had a huge downpour for about an hour! I know it doesn't look like like it was coming down that hard, but the streets were filled with water because there was so much, so quickly!
Look at this beautiful rainbow!
Later on in the week when hubby arrived back home, we divided and conquered! Hubby coached soccer, while I did our weekly Costco shopping trip (the twins were playing an "arm inside their shirt" game!).
November and December are going to be incredibly busy with work stuff; so we are all holding onto our hats and preparing ourselves for our crazy life to get a little crazier!

Pick of the Patch

A few weeks ago we went to the pumpkin patch with my sister, her boyfriend Andy, and my mom! Thank goodness my sister occasionally goes places with us, because I pretty much never carry my nice camera now that the kids are so mobile and I have to constantly be running after one of them! Not only does she bring out her "real" camera, but we have the added bonus that she is a photographer for Awe Captures Photography! She and Andy took all these!

I also finally updated the photos on the right side of my blog, replacing my out-of-date pumpkin patch photos with these! Ummmmm. I still call the twins, "the babies," but it is clear from this photo that we need a new term. They couldn't look any less like babies!

And, of course, my six-year-old is so big! SO BIG!
Miss Isabella Lynn
Our little family. It was SO warm. I think it was 95 and we were all hot and sweaty, but at least we got a photo with everyone looking (not sure why Connor isn't smiling).
The kids love their Nana! Love, love, love!
And, sometimes, just sometimes they love each other. Haha! My favorite part of this photo is that Connor's shirt is tucked into his little boxers. Hello adorable!
My sister told them to say "Boo!" This is their scary boo face!
My sister and her oldest nephew!
I snapped this for the adorable photographers!
And, one of them with our littles!
I just adore these photos and am so thankful that we have them! If you need a photographer in the Sacramento area, check out their website

Midweek Randoms

Last week was pretty crazy, which is why I haven't written for a while. Mr. Howard was traveling for a bit, so I was on my own with the kids (which is always all sorts of insane) and then we had some crazy family stuff happen. Then this week has been miserable. Do you ever have those weeks where nothing seems to go right? That's been my week. On my way home from my hair appointment on Tuesday, I stopped for french fries because it was THAT kind of week...A french fries and tequila kind of week. Needless to say, I'll be happy on Sunday when I can start over and have a fresh do-over! Of course, hubby is traveling again tomorrow, so I won't get a super relaxing fresh start - but it'll have to do!

This week I am obsessed with Jessie Ware's Say You Love Me and Baby It's Cold Outside by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Jordan. I'm willing the cold weather to arrive, since it's been in the 90's here still. Today, however, it's 60 and raining, so it seems like the perfect day for Ella Fitzgerald and soup! Hallelujah!

Hubby is doing a big bike event really soon, so when he gets up early to train, I've been getting up (suuuuper early) and reading quietly on the couch before the kids wake up!

Here's a screenshot of just my personal calendar from last month (I have different calendar settings and colors for my work one). It's difficult to explain how crazy our lives are, but I think this captures it! Every day, literally EVERY day, we have at least two things going on after school. On top of that, generally hubby and I both then come home, put the kids to bed, and work on things we didn't finish that day. That usually means that Mr. Howard gets on his computer, logs in remotely to his work office and works for another few hours and I've been cleaning, organizing, lesson planning, or blogging. Of course this calendar doesn't show all the things I don't add to the calendar, like kid hair cuts, costco shopping trips, trips to the dry cleaners, Connor's school projects, work-outs and runs, hubby bike rides, work appointments, and early morning wake ups to get donuts for hubby's office meetings. It's crazy-ville!

I did finally get to go on a run with friends last week, which was amazing. I don't even have words to describe how much I've missed running with them!!! I never did a knee update, but that's on my to-do list!

I mentioned before that hubby went out of town for work last week. Of course the kids decided that would be the perfect opportunity to wake up multiple times in the night (they NEVER do that!) and Isabella decided to draw ALLLLL over our toilet base and seat. Grrrrr.
When Mr. Howard came home, he sent me to the couch to watch tv, while he gave the kids a bath and put them to bed. Thank goodness.
Connor had his school Jog-a-thon and my mom was able to go. She snapped this photo. Can you spy a certain hiding adorable six-year-old who is ready to run?!?
On Saturday, we had Connor's soccer game and my parents were able to come, which made Connor so excited!
We are making poor progress on our stairs, but we at least painted the wood for our risers. Baby steps. We're doing a cherry sort of finish on the treads and white risers, which hopefully will look nice!
I got my hair done and boy did I need it. Not only did I need the break for girl talk with my hair dresser, but my roots were out of control!
Speaking of hair cuts, we finally found an hour to get Connor's done! Now we just need to find time for Aiden's! It seems just as we find time to squeeze in a hair cut, it's time for another one! Ha! Story of our lives.
The kids are obsessed with Blaze Pizza, where they can pick out everything they want on their own individual pizzas! They love walking along, picking out everything they want to put.
These sweet kids love their daddy!
Connor didn't have school a few days this week and one of the joys of having a teacher for a mommy (ha!) is that when the poor kid doesn't have school, he gets to come to MY school to watch me teach. Lucky him!
I finished all 1880 pages of the fourth Outlander, Drums of Autumn. And it ONLY took me three months (that's sarcasm)! I actually did the majority of the reading while I was in Washington D.C. and finally finished last week.
